Top 10 Trends 2023 report

Continuing the tradition from last year, the Norwegian Blue Forest Network has gathered marine experts to assemble their joint overview of the greatest trends for blue forests research, management and policy over the course of the year.

2023 unfolded as a year of unprecedented challenges, from global warming to biodiversity loss. The impact on blue forests may not be easy to see as changes on land, but it was nevertheless significant. Norway experienced its share with the disruptive Storm Hans, where flooding darkened the Oslofjord, warming seas drove species northward, and invasive species like “Sea vomit” reshaped Norwegian kelp forests.

In response to the climate and biodiversity crises, countries started work on implementing the UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and collaboration on the high-integrity blue carbon markets expanded. The High Level Ocean Panel unveiled the “Blue Carbon Handbook”, the World Bank offered guidance on blue carbon investments, and grassroots efforts like the Kelp Forest Challenge gained momentum. Amid crises, 2023 became a year of action.

The NBFN Top Ten Trends 2023 Report delves into key Norwegian, regional, and global shifts, showcasing progress and highlighting bottlenecks to be resolved. As we navigate these trends, we outline areas to watch in 2024 and beyond. Join us in shaping a resilient future for blue forests, where nature-positive actions safeguard our natural treasures.
